Members and supporters of Verulam Community Radio have welcomed last week’s announcement by the Ofcom of a five year Community Radio Licence for the group to broadcast Radio Verulam on FM to St Albans and the surrounding area.

Radio Verulam has been broadcasting via the NTL cable system for over ten years and on the Internet for four years now. The station also broadcast on a short term “Restricted Service Licence” (RSL) during the St Albans Festival in the Summer of 2004.

Founder and Chairman Clive Glover said “This is fantastic news. This is what we have been working towards for the past fifteen years ? a truly local community radio service for St Albans that can be heard by anone in the area on a normal FM radio.”

Station Manager Phil Richards said “This will be an very different service for the local area and there will be many opportunities for local people to get involved in everything we do. Radio Verulam will truly be radio for the Community”.

The news of the licence award came as the group is preparing a special broadcast on FM during the St Albans Festival in June/July as a “taster” of the future full time FM service, which they hope will be on air in the second half of 2007.
