Hundreds of community radio stations in rural parts of Thailand, where deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has support, have been forced to shut down by the military. Local newspapers quote Junta Spokesman Colonel Acar Tiproj as saying: "This is to avoid unrest and cause no misunderstanding of the situation".

'We want to prevent any reports that can cause disunity for the country,' he said.

The military shut down more than 300 community radio stations. They also threatened over the weekend to shut down media that violated tough new regulations that included bans on radio call-in shows and limits on websites and text messaging.
