The licence race for the new commercial radio station for Bristol has been won by CanWest. This is the second licence won by the Canadian media giant, after winning the Solent licence last year, also as Original 106.

The new station, to be known as Original 106 will serve half a million adults in the Bristol area and will provide 'Adult Alternative Radio – an eclectic mix of adult-oriented music with particular appeal to 40-59 year-olds, with 24 hour local news'.

Six companies put in the for licence, including GCap Media and Macquarie, but Original's mix of adult music and 24 hour news have won them their 2nd licence in as many years. Owners CanWest are just days away from launching their first station in Solent, also using the Original name.
