Manchester community radio station Gaydio is teaming up with BBC Radio Manchester for a special day of programming to support World AIDS Day on December 1st.
Volunteers from Gaydio's first temporary RSL broadcast earlier this year will help provide live coverage of the city's Red & Wild festival.
The special programming will start off at 2pm on BBC Radio Manchester's FM frequencies 95.1 and 104.6. The station's mobile studio, Studio 6, will be live from Sackville Gardens, home to the Candlelit Vigil and the Beacon of Hope – the UK's only permanent memorial to those that have died from AIDS. Those listening on DAB will then be able to keep listening to a whole day of special programming for the rest of the day. Highlights include coverage of The Candlelit Vigil, music performances and some great guests.
John Ryan, Managing Editor of BBC Radio Manchester told RadioToday.co.uk “We're delighted to be working with Gaydio's volunteer broadcasters once again, on this important day of programming. Our unique Pride partnership contributed quality content to both stations. Now we hope to tell the story of AIDS and HIV in Manchester and around the world”
Gaydio Programme Controller, Toby Whitehouse added "In August, both stations worked together to broadcast The Candlelit Vigil for the first time in its history. It's great to receive continued support from BBC Radio Manchester. Gaydio was received extremely well by the community during our two-week broadcast around Manchester Pride and we're really pleased to be able to work with the BBC again for World AIDS Day. Although we are focussed on Manchester's LGBT community, AIDS is a much wider, global issue that touches the lives of people from all communities across the world, so its really important to be able to extend our reach for this event"
