Emap Radio have created a new position to head up charity work for the company's Big City network. Cath Ellington, previously the boss at Stockton-based TFM, has been promoted to the job. She'll be responsible for overseeing the charitable function for the group's 32 local radio stations.

In 2005 Emap raised £3.3 million for children's charities across the UK and it is thought the new role will help to increase this by sharing working practices and creating joined-up charitable activities across the group.

Big City managing director Travis Baxter says, "This is an important and key role and we're delighted that someone of Cath's experience will be driving this project which really gets to the heart of what local radio is all about."

Cath added, "It's both a privilege and a challenge to take up this new role. Emap is committed to ensuring its local radio stations' charity work goes from strength to strength, and that Big City charities continue to help sick and under-privileged children.

"My aim is to work with the new enlarged Big City group to really build on the existing great work, to increase our charities' national profile so we can increase the amount we can give back to the children in our local areas."

The regional MD for the North East region of the Big City Network, Sally Aitchison, will oversee operations at TFM until a permanent replacement is recruited.
