Former GCapMedia Chief Executive David Mansfield is part of the team launching a bid to run the UK's second national digital radio multiplex. National Grid Wireless already owns 2 of the 6 digital terrestrial television licences and provides transmission services for Freeview.

NGW will be up against Channel 4 and others for the right to run another 10-station DAB multiplex, advertised late last year by Ofcom. The closing date for applications is March 28.

David Mansfield, who prior to the merger of GWR and Capital Radio was the Capital MD, is advising NGW on their bid – along with fellow radio specialists Jason Bryant and Mike Franklin. Jason is the MD of Town & Country Broadcasting and previously worked as Development Director for Virgin Radio. Mike was formerly Managing Director of national station talkSPORT.

Steven Marshall, CEO of National Grid Wireless, told "I am delighted that we have been able to assemble such an experienced team to support our bid. Their in-depth industry knowledge, combined with our own skills and experience, will enable us to offer Ofcom and the commercial radio industry a range of services which will ensure a great future for digital radio in the UK."

National Grid Wireless is the company formerly known as Crown Castle Communications which founded Freeview along with Sky and the BBC.
