A pub in the town where the legendary Radio 1 presenter John Peel was born has been named after him, after it was suggested by locals there.
The Ravenscroft takes its name from Peel's real name – and has been given the seal of approval by his late wife Sheila Ravenscroft. The broadcaster, who died in 2004, was born John Robert Parker Ravenscroft in the Merseyside town of Heswall in 1939.
The pub has a large portrait of John inside – the building's undergone a £800,000 transformation as it used to be a post office and health club.
The bar's manager Iain Middlebrough told the Liverpool Daily Post: "The response since we opened has been absolutely fantastic — we’ve been getting loads of people coming in and taking pictures in front of the big portrait of John we’ve got on the wall."
Peel's widow Sheila told the paper: “John’s grandmother, who was a nice person but terribly traditional, correct and genteel, lived in spitting distance of where the pub now stands. I always a have a laugh imagining what she would have thought about a pub being named after John.”
