BBC causes problems for Beacon

BBC Radio Shropshire has apologised to Beacon Radio after supplying wrongly marked information regarding school closures.

The two stations, along with the local council, were testing a new way of communicating information which didn't go according to plan.

The BBC wrote to Beacon Radio after the event, saying it made "two unacceptable mistakes which impacted on the service we offered you".

The stations previously agreed the best way to gather information from schools was for data to be collected by BBC Radio Shropshire, then passed on to Beacon Radio (and other media organisations). But because of a lack of staff and organisation, wrong information was sent.

A BBC Spokesperson told RadioToday.co.uk: "BBC Radio Shropshire collates a list of closed schools and shares that information with partners including other (non-BBC) radio stations.

"Today was the first time that this system was used and unfortunately there were a few teething problems whereby the closure details sent to our partners did not make it explicit which schools were closed. This led to other stations broadcasting incorrect information about school closures. We immediately took steps to ensure this doesn't happen again.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Beacon Radio has published a letter on its website explaining the errors were the fault of Radio Shropshire rather than themselves.
