Tributes have been paid to BBC Radio 3 and World Service presenter Charlie Gillett who has died aged 68.

And Radio 3's World On 3 programme on Friday night will mark his passing, whilst a special tribute programme to him is planned for a future date.

Peter Horrocks, Director BBC Global News and BBC World Service, said: "Charlie Gillet was an inspiration whose spirit of adventure and passion for the rich diversity of global music opened the ears of the world. His broadcasts brought together music and radio fans from far flung corners of the globe.

"His postbag was one of the biggest, most affectionate and diverse in Bush House which confirmed his special place in listener's lives. He was a very special broadcaster and he will be sorely missed."

Roger Wright, Controller BBC Radio 3, said: "News of Charlie's death is terribly sad. To his audiences he was 'Mr World Music' and the community of listeners is left richer for his tireless support of an extraordinary range of artists.

"We were privileged at Radio 3 to have been able to offer Charlie a platform so he could continue his unique work in broadening musical horizons."
