The BBC has rejected reports that 6 Music will be re-branded as Radio 2 Extra, under new cost cutting plans.

Newspapers, including the Times and Guardian suggested the new station could broadcast for 12 hours a day with mostly the same playlist and presenters.

In a brief statement, the BBC said: "We have said that we will re-invest any funds from the proposed closure of 6 Music in digital radio content. This commitment remains and we are looking at a number of ways of doing it.

"But simply re-branding 6 Music as Radio 2 Extra is not one of them"

The original [link=http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/tv_and_radio/article7094301.ece]report[/link], in the Sunday Times, said "tagging 6 Music onto Radio 2 will probably cut some costs, but the overall level of savings remains unclear. Broadcasts on Radio 2 Extra could be limited to 12 hours a day during the week."

A public consultation into the planned closure of 6 Music will run until the end of May.
