Another protest for 6 Music

Following on from winning two Sony Radio Academy Gold Awards, and increasing its audience by almost 50 per cent, the station is to get another protest outside Broadcasting House.

It's organised by dedicated fans of the station, and will take place on May 22nd.

This event follows the [link=]earlier[/link] demonstration on 27th March, which was attended by many hundreds of people.

The demonstration hopes to reverse the decision by the BBC to close the station, and marks the end of the BBC Trust's consultation process.

BBC 6 Music won two Sony Radio Academy Gold Awards – Adam and Joe won the award for Best Comedy, and Jarvis Cocker won the DAB 'Rising Star' Award, voted for by the public.

RAJAR radio listening figures show that the number of listeners to the digital station has increased to over a million, an increase of 50 per cent, in the past three months, and average listening hours have increased to seven hours per week.

"What the BBC proposes is unacceptable. We believe BBC 6 Music should retained as a station in its own right – broadcasting 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, not as a sister station to any other BBC station or lost altogether. BBC 6 Music is the only place that caters for our diverse tastes, giving us access to the BBC's rich musical archive and offering valuable exposure to new music that may not otherwise be heard on a national radio station. The presenters play music they are passionate about to an audience who are passionate about music," says Georgina Rodgers, co-founder of the Save BBC 6 Music organising committee.

The protest, which will be safe and peaceful, will start at 12 noon and run until 2pm.
