Format changes for Real Radio

GMG Radio has applied to Ofcom for permission to change the Format of Real Radio South Wales and its yet to launch North and Mid Wales station.

The request, if granted will see Real Radio operate one national rather than two regional stations in the country.

As part of a proposal to offer a single pan-Wales radio service, GMG has requested that the focus of the stations change from providing ‘regional information’ to providing ‘information about Wales’. The request, if granted, is subject to Real Radio Wales being broadcast on local or regional DAB multiplexes in every part of Wales where they exist.

Real Radio won the licences for North and Mid Wales almost two years ago, after a two-way battle between the owners of Chester's Dee 106.3, who, at the time, proposed a local service 24 hours a day.

The request has gone into public consultation.
