Well know and long serving BBC Radio Newcastle presenter Frank Wappat has died at the age of 84.

Frank worked for the BBC for over 40 years, and died at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary earlier today – on his birthday. His first radio job was at Radio 390 on the Thames Estuary and he’s won two Sonys since 1999. He retired in 2010 after 40 years working for the corporation.

He’s the father of former Radio Newcastle Smooth Radio presenter Paul Wappat.

BBC Newcastle editor Andrew Robson described him as “legend” on the station. He told BBC News: “I didn’t get the chance to work with him for too long but his name was synonymous with this radio station for decades.

“Frank retired due to ill health four years ago. Our thoughts are with his wife and family and friends at this difficult time.”

His website, has a tribute to his 40 years of broadcasting.
