BBC World Service is to introduce a pilot of Global Newsbeat – radio bulletins aimed at younger audiences around the world.

It’s part of a new £8m investment plan for digital and multiplatform news programming at the network, director Peter Horrocks announced today – six weeks before the World Service rejoins the Licence Fee.

World Service TV programmes and responsive mobile sites will play an increasingly important part in the World Service, but radio will remain its ‘bedrock’.

Around 130 new jobs will be created in the coming year around the BBC’s Global News division, which will be renamed as the World Service Group.

Horrocks said the World Service had weathered the deep cuts it was subjected to and used them as ‘a spur to innovation’. He said commercial top-up funding will enable more investment in content and services without increasing costs to licence fee payers.
