Opinion piece: LBC said an official “Hello Britain” last night as Sky News hosted its leaders debate show on national television.

All the stops were pulled out for the Nick Clegg v Nigel Farage debate, which included a live build-up, behind the scenes footage, the live debate and post-show analysis.

Kay Burley continued on-air at Sky News to cover the event into the evening, complete with a full room of special guests and presenters, whilst LBC set up a mobile studio backstage to continue the debate long after the television cameras switched off.

Twitter was full of praise from industry leaders for the whole team at LBC, including Managing Editor James Rea and Deputy Group Head of News Vicky Etchells.

#LBCdebate was at the number one trending spot on Twitter for most of the evening too, with #CleggvFarage and #NickvNigel taking second and third place.

Global Radio founder Ashley Tabor tweeted his thoughts, saying: “Reflecting on the evening. So proud of the whole team @LBC & @thisisglobal today, thank you to everyone who worked so hard.”

Global’s Group CEO Stephen Miron also congratulated staff: “Well done @NickFerrariLBC on a fantastic #LBCDebate tonight. Not been a bad first month Leading Britain’s Conversation!!”

LBC recently ‘went national’ with coverage on DAB across the UK, changing from London’s Biggest Conversation to Leading Britain’s Conversation.

Many polls were cast on who the winner of the debate was, with coverage on the BBC and in this morning’s newspapers, but after watching the event, it’s clear who the real winner was – and that was LBC.
