Heart to Capital Format change approved

Heart North Wales and Heart Wrexham and Chester have been given Ofcom approval on a new Format, allowing Global to change the stations to Capital.

The change is part of the plan to turn Real Radio’s Wales-wide licence into Heart Wales – but to avoid a service duplication in North Wales, Global asked for a couple of words to be changed in the Format for the former Marcher stations to allow the stations to join the Capital network.

Heart Wrexham and Chester’s Format was previously “An adult contemporary music and information service” but changing this to “A chart and contemporary music and information service” allows more chart music on the service and a re-brand to Capital.

Heart North Wales Coast will keep the requirements for six one-hour long programmes per week in Welsh but has changed the description from “past and present pop music” to “pop music”.

There’s no date for the changes, but we’ll let you know as soon as Global release that information.

In approving, Ofcom said: “Ofcom considered that the extent of the impact of the change on the overall character of the service would be limited, and therefore decided to exercise its discretion to agree to the change.”
