Ofcom invites more Community Radio bids

Ofcom has invited licence applications for community radio licences for West and East Midlands.

The regulator planned to advertise “Region 7” for the West Midlands, East Midlands and the east of England at this stage but has taken the decision to redefine the region and split it into two smaller regions as it expects a large number of applications.

“This change will allow us to process and reach licence award decisions more quickly,” Ofcom says. Applications from the East of England region will be advertised later this year.

Currently Ofcom is working its way through the 38 applications for Region 5, which is classified as west and south Yorkshire, Humberside and north west England. So far three have been awarded and five have been rejected.

Applications for community licences for West and East Midlands must be received by 5pm on 24 June 2014. Ofcom says there are parts of this region where suitable FM frequencies are not available and licences cannot be offered, so check here before putting an application together.
