The BBC makes its first-ever Welsh app

BBC Radio Cymru has helped to launch the BBC’s first Welsh language smartphone app.
The app is the latest product of recently-launched Welsh language service BBC Cymru Fyw – the new online service which offers a offers a collection of stories from Wales. It includes a magazine section with feature articles, opinion pieces, blogs and photo galleries and the ability to listen live to BBC Radio Cymru.
It builds on the existing web service and had a special launch at the Eisteddfod featuring BBC Cymru Wales Director Rhodri Talfan Davies in the BBC Radio Cymru tent. Visitors to the tent will also be to try out the app throughout the week, using a giant phone.
Featuring a stream of short updates, covering news, politics, sport, arts and popular culture, the app also offers a taste of current talking points on websites such as Twitter and Facebook.
Sian Gwynedd, BBC Wales’ Head of Welsh Language Programmes and Services said: “When Cymru Fyw launched just a couple of months ago, we knew it offered a new and unique service for Welsh speakers. But we also knew the service would have to be dynamic and easy to use, making the best use of technology in a world where information is driven by mobile devices, so we’re very proud to unveil this exciting new app today.”
Described by Huw Edwards as a huge milestone in the history of the language, BBC Cymru Fyw is designed to adapt to fast-changing consumer needs, using new technology to offer easy access to a range of relevant material across the web.
