A new prototype hybrid car adaptor has been unveiled by Radioplayer at the Next Radio Conference in London.
The new device, which is fitted behind a dashboard, includes a dedicated app to use on the driver’s smartphone which acts as the radio interface.
Michael Hill, Managing Director of Radioplayer, demonstrated the technology which scans DAB, DAB+, FM, and internet sources automatically selecting the best platform to deliver any station.
If a signal is lost, it switches to the same station on another platform.
The prototype in-car adaptor has been developed in conjunction with Connects2, an automotive audio firm based in the West Midlands. Radioplayer says safety is a key factor in its design, which is as simple to use as a car radio. A listener can swipe anywhere on the screen to move through their pre-set stations. A voice identifies each station and tap anywhere on the screen stops and re-starts the radio.
It also supports bluetooth for hands-free calls, and it even reads text messages to you. The software can also receive instant audio travel news, customised by GPS to their location and direction of travel.
Michael Hill said: “We’re proud to be prototyping the next generation of radios, on behalf of the whole industry. Simplicity has always been one of the great joys of our medium, and we want to work with chip manufacturers, car companies, and audio firms to re-simplify radio”.
It was also announced today that Radioplayer will be launching in Germany early next year after a deal was done with “Radioplayer Deutschland”, a partnership between 18 of Germany’s commercial broadcasters.
