Amongst Ofcom’s plan for 2015/2016 is the goal to complete the music formats review and implement small-scale DAB services.

The regulator says it wants to do three things with regards to radio:

  • Complete our review of music formats regulation on radio
  • Complete our review of the EPG code
  • Develop plans for the implementation and licensing of small-scale DAB

Ofcom is already underway with plans to relax music formats with a closing date of last July for input from the industry. The results were mixed, with some not wanting a change at all. The outcome, if for a change, is not expected to make a big impact on radio station’s formats but will make it easier to make small alterations such as the amount of specialist music or amount of speech broadcast.

And applications are currently invited to operate small-scale DAB services, with a closing date of April 7th. Stations already expressing an interest in Small Scale DAB include Celador and UKRD plus a number of hospital, student, online and community radio stations.
