Ofcom investigates Bauer over text charges

Bauer Media is refunding some listeners after admitting to mistakenly charging for incoming text messages sent to the studio of one of its radio stations.

A Metro Radio 2 listener contacted RadioToday to say they’d received a message inviting them to apply for a refund. It’s understood some messages sent to interact with the station/presenter were treated as premium rate competition entries and a charge applied to the listener’s phone.

Ofcom has told RadioToday that it has received a complaint and as such will investigate whether or not the Broadcast Code has been breached in any way.

A Bauer Media spokesperson told us: “We have had an issue with Metro Radio 2 text the studio texts, which affected 216 listeners. This was for text to the studio presenter interaction and not premium rate competition entries – we have offered all of those affected a full refund.”
