BBC Radio 1 has increased its audience to over 10m listeners this quarter, including an increase at breakfast for Nick Grimshaw.

The main talking points:

  • BBC Radio 2 remains the most listened to radio station in the UK with 15.14 million listeners
  • BBC Radio 1 now has 10.44 million listeners per week – which rises to 11.34m when listeners aged 10 to 14 are included
  • Nick Grimshaw increased his weekly reach by 344,000 to 5.84 million
  • Capital FM is the biggest commercial station in London with 2.20m, closely followed by KISS with 2.12m
  • LBC has its biggest London audience with 1.13m, up from 887k last quarter
  • talkSPORT and 5 live both lose listeners, whilst Sports Extra is up 76% year on year
  • KISSTORY hits almost 1.5m digital listeners, up from 1.1m last quarter, whilst KISS FRESH also increases audience

Ben Cooper, Controller Radio 1 & 1Xtra is pleased with the gain in listeners this survey for Radio 1, which brought in nearly 750,000 new listeners: “I’d like to thank Clara and Annie Mac for helping us add three-quarters of a million listeners in such a short time, and I’m delighted that we are also averaging over one million requests a month on the Radio 1 iPlayer channel and over one million views a day on YouTube. Radio 1 will continue to bring new music, new presenters and new innovations to our young audience.”

BBC Radio 1 lost 700,000 listeners last quarter.

6 Music is back on top as the biggest digital station, having lost the title to Radio 4 Extra last quarter. Both stations are hovering around the 2m mark – and both have more listeners than BBC Radio 3 which has 1.89m weekly listeners.

All BBC Radio’s weekly reach over the period was 48.18 million (34.87m last quarter and 35.23m last year) and a share of 45.5% (54.4% last quarter and 53.3% last year).

The BBC World Service posted a weekly UK audience of 1.55 million (from 1.35m last quarter and 1.37m last year).

Helen Boaden, Director of BBC Radio, said: “Radio is frequently underestimated so it’s wonderful to see the whole market growing this quarter.”

At talkSPORT, the station is claiming to be closing the gap on 5 live, when in reality both stations lost listeners. 5 live lost the most, making the gap (now 2.3m) smaller. The demographics for the station are 84% male and 54% ABC1.

Scott Taunton, talkSPORT’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “This is a really pleasing set of figures for us, as it shows great resilience in the absence of a major football tournament this summer. It’s testament to the investment we have put into our on-air talent, with regular big name co-hosts on the station such as Mike Tindall, Danny Murphy and Daley Thompson. There’s a very exciting time ahead for everyone at talkSPORT, as we prepare to launch four national stations next year.”

At Bauer, the KISS network is over 5m listeners for the first time, with KISS in London also not far behind leaders Capital. It’s also a record reach for KISSTORY at 1.5m and KISS FRESH at 576,000. Bauer continues to do well digitally, with 53% of total Bauer Radio listening taking place via a digital device compared to the industry average of 40%.

Magic is on 2m listeners again in London (well, 1.99m!), the first time since 2012, and the main Absolute Radio stays the same this quarter, whilst 70s, 80s and Classic Rock report more increases.

Dee Ford, Group Managing Director Radio, Bauer Media, said: “This is a fantastic book of ‘best-evers’ with outstanding results from our KISS, Absolute Radio and Magic brands. With over 53% of Bauer Media’s listening delivered via a digital device – versus the industry average of 40% – we have consolidated our position as a digital leader. This will only continue to grow with the upcoming launch of Bauer’s exciting new national radio launches in Q1 2016.”

Capital is back on top as the most listened to commercial radio station in London with 2.2m weekly listeners – adding 407,000 listeners in just three months.

Heart is still in 4th place but has added 452,000 listeners in the same period – it now has almost 2m listeners in London and almost 9m nationwide.

Capital Xtra has also recovered this quarter from recent RAJAR drops. It now has 478,000 weekly listeners compared with 311,000 last quarter.

XFM London is up this quarter from 363,000 to 434,000 listeners, whilst the network is up slightly.

Smooth Radio London is static at 684,000 – up quarter on quarter but down year on year.

Both LBC and LBC News are up, reaching record audiences.

Ashley Tabor, founder & executive president of Global, said: “This is a fantastic set of results for Global. Capital wins hands down across the UK and wins in the fiercely competitive London market where we have 2.2 million people tuning in every week to hear the hottest hit music, making Capital London’s number 1 commercial station. Winning both the London breakfast reach (with Capital) and share (with Heart) is also very special. Global continues to lead the commercial sector with the country’s top three radio networks in Heart, Capital and Classic FM. I’m very proud of how hard everyone at Global has worked to achieve these figures.”

Richard Park, group executive director and director of broadcasting at Global, said: “Another stellar set of numbers for Global. LBC is a force to be reckoned with, setting the news agenda across the country and achieving its biggest ever audience on record with more listeners and hours, and a greater market share than ever before. Heart London now reaches two million listeners every week helping strengthen Heart’s position as the UK’s number one commercial radio network, and Capital Xtra beats Radio 1Xtra for the first time ever. This is a great set of results for Global.”
