Here’s what happened on the Chris Moyles Show

The radio industry woke up extra early today to hear the launch of Radio X and the return of Chris Moyles.

The first show was just like picking up where he left off on BBC Radio 1 over three years ago. His new team is Dominic Byrne on news, Pippa Taylor as producer and Dave Masterson from XFM breakfast, which they’ve nick named Madame.

Chris mentioned on many occasions the station press release, which he blames Stephen Miron for, especially the line “a completely new national music and entertainment property for 25-44 year old men”, saying it is a load of balls. A special promo was produced with VO Paul Turner explaining that the station is for everyone, including women and the gay community, not just men.

Here’s how the show launched:

VO: It’s Monday the 21st September 2015, it’s just gone 6.30am, and after serving three years in a women’s only prison, the wait is finally over. Get ready Great Britain, live from Leicester Square London and across the UK, this is the Chris Moyles Show”

CHRIS: Hello again Great Britain, well this is a bit weird innit, so it’s 6.32 Monday 21st September, welcome to a brand new radio station. I’ve been waiting three years for this place, sitting on my backside doing nothing, and now I’m back on the radio. That’s right the money finally ran out. And what better place for my comeback than a brand new radio station that i can play with and do with whatever I want. Which isn’t entirely true.

Judging by social media, most of the radio industry was up early to listen to the opening of the new show.

Here’s just a few highlights of what happened:

  • Chris revealed he’s on a three year contract with Global
  • 15 songs were played during the three and a half hour show
  • One song played in the first 30 minutes
  • Four songs played in hour 7
  • Four songs played in hour 8

  • Mentions for Jon Holmes, Gavin Inskip, Simon Conway, Stephanie Hirst’s dead cat
  • It was cleared up that Radio X is not just for men
  • First song was Girls Aloud – Love Machine 27 minutes into the show
  • The stream broke around 45 minutes into the show, and reports of the app not working too
  • Dominic had to do an impression of Global’s Richard Park “Dear Boy”, whilst Stephen Miron was talked about
  • No mention of Global’s founder and Executive President Ashley Tabor
  • Chris proving how cool he is by telling us which gigs he’s been to in the last year: The Who Jonny Marr, Taylor Swift, Culture Club, James Bay and Matt and Kim!
  • Big mentions for Radio X in Belgium after confusion over the app
  • Ident “Chris wanted to play Taylor Swift but the boss said no so reluctantly here’s some indie music”
  • Chris deliberately missed out Johnny Vaughan when talking about the station schedule
  • The adverts were mentioned: “These ads really get in the way of my creativity” Chris moaned. He failed to play his first ad break correctly leading to dead air.

  • Mentions for Classic FM, Heart, Capital, LBC, Magic, and many more radio stations
  • Emma Bunton walked past the studio window waving!

  • A long discussion about ‘From Global’s newsroom’ took place between Dominic Byrne, Chris Moyles and special guest Noel Gallagher

Quotes from Chris:

  • Nice to be back on the radio as Vernon Kay’s warm up man. Nothing changes
  • Let me be the first of many Radio X DJs to say this show is not male focussed and the comments in the press are a load of balls
  • Rachel isn’t here. Aled isn’t here. Hey Ben Cooper we can do whatever we want!

And one from Vernon Kay:

  • Vernon is going to play ‘all the songs Chris should have played’
