Digital station Radio Yorkshire is expanding its coverage area back into parts of Leeds after an extension of a local multiplex.

The Leeds-based station has not been available in the city since the regional MXR mux closed over a year ago. Some of the services transferred to Bauer’s Leeds multiplex but Radio Yorkshire didn’t make the move. It has been available on Muxco’s North Yorkshire service, plus Wireless Group’s Bradford and Huddersfield ever since.

The Bradford extension is expected on August 1st, but still doesn’t officially cover the city of Leeds – more the outskirts.

In programming news, Radio Yorkshire has also hired former Leeds and Rotherham boss Neil Redfearn as lead summariser for Leeds United Live coverage for the 2016/17 season.

Neil joins commentator Mark Wilson and Statistician Andrew Dalton for all home and away matches.

Neil Redfearn said; “I’m looking forward joining the team at Radio Yorkshire and getting to watch Leeds United every week. It looks like an exciting season ahead.”

Neil Redfearn will also join Mark and “Stats” for a weekly show every Wednesday night 6-8pm which kicks off on 20th July.

Leeds United commentator Mark Wilson said; “I’d like to thank Greg Abbott for his excellent contribution last season. Having the knowledge of being both a player and a manager adds so much for the listener. It was going to be incredibly tough to replace him, but we have done that in style with the appointment of Neil.

“Neil knows of the pressure involved in football on and off the field, and can offer us insights only someone has been there and done it can. I look forward to working with him and building the stations reputation for excellent honest football coverage both on match day and during the week.”

Director of Broadcasting Sam Brydges said “It’s brilliant to have Neil on board. He’s so passionate about the club and excited to get going. It’s also great to re-extend our DAB coverage, it’s been a frustrating period but this is some very good news for listeners.”

Correction: We previously reported that Radio Yorkshire was joining the Bauer multiplex but this has been corrected.
