BBC Radio 2 is looking at hiring Stephanie Hirst for a regular show, according to a report.
The Sunday Mirror says Stephanie has had four meetings with senior bosses, including three full auditions, which saw her record her radio show as though it is live and going out on air.
A source told the paper she is “very much in line for a job on the station”, and says she will take over from Gambo who “is moving to Pick of the Pops”. However, Paul moved to Pick of the Pops on Saturday 9th July and Trevor Nelson is now in Paul’s Saturday night slot.
UPDATE: The BBC has told RadioToday that the report is not accurate, saying: “This story is untrue and Paul Gambaccini remains the presenter of Pick of the Pops”.
UPDATE 2: The Mirror has removed the story.
Stephanie currently hosts a Saturday night show on BBC Radio Manchester, which until recently was an all 90s show. It has just changed to a show playing vinyl.
If Stephanie ends up on the network, it will create more media headlines – as it has done in the Sunday Mirror – as they will highlight that it will be the first time the station has hired a transgender radio presenter for a permanent show.
