Former Radio 2 presenter Tony Blackburn says he is sad that he was excluded from the special memorial service for Sir Terry Wogan.

He said he wanted to be there because he knew him so well, and that Terry was a lovely man. He said an invitation to the event on Tuesday “would have been nice”.

His tweet on Tuesday afternoon, whilst the service was taking place, said: “I would love to have paid my respects to my friend Sir Terry today but sadly wasn’t invited !!”

He received over a hundred replies from his fans unhappy with the “way he has been treated” by the BBC.

A BBC spokesperson said: “Sir Terry had so many friends and colleagues from so many walks of life and we tried to cater for as many as possible to attend the service.”

Tony left the organisation in February because his version of events over a 1971 allegation does not tally with the corporation. He recently wished the BBC “Good Luck” with their upcoming 50th anniversary of BBC Radio 1 next year.
