BBC Radio Derby afternoon presenter Andy Potter has told listeners he has terminal cancer and might not be back on the radio much.
Andy, speaking on the breakfast show this morning, said: “The best thing to do is to let everyone know what’s going on otherwise little bits drip out about how poorly you are but this has been going on for weeks but yesterday I was told I have a few months to live. I have cancer in the bowel, liver and kidneys and is inoperable.
“This is one of the last times you’ll hear me coming out of your radio box.”
The 55-year-old also thanked listeners for everything.
BBC Radio Derby Editor, Simon Cornes said: “We’re still coming to terms with this devastating news. Andy wanted to let his listeners know as soon as possible and spoke to our breakfast presenter Ian Skye from his hospital bed this morning. Radio Derby is a tightly-knit family and all of Andy’s friends here have both him and his loved ones in their thoughts.”
Andy has been on afternoons since 2010, having first joined the station in 1999. BBC Radio Derby posted the news this morning on Facebook and Twitter, gaining replies of support from colleagues and listeners.
His diagnosis follows the death of former BBC Radio Derby presenter Colin Bloomfield from skin cancer less than two years ago.
