After appearing on-air just a few weeks ago to announce his diagnosis, Andy Potter has died from cancer.
The station informed listeners this morning and tweeted a link to the news on social media.
Simon Cornes, Editor of BBC Radio Derby told the BBC: “Andy is going to be deeply missed by all his friends at Radio Derby as well as the thousands of listeners who regularly tuned into his programmes. He’s been a big part of the station for many years and it’s hard to imagine the place without him. Andy was a Derby man through and through and a great champion of the city’s arts scene.
“If there was an event taking place in Derby it was a pretty safe bet that Andy would be there and a good chance that he’d be hosting it. Our thoughts are with Andy’s loved ones at this difficult time.”
Andy, speaking on the breakfast show on January 26th, said: “The best thing to do is to let everyone know what’s going on otherwise little bits drip out about how poorly you are but this has been going on for weeks but yesterday I was told I have a few months to live. I have cancer in the bowel, liver and kidneys and is inoperable.
“This is one of the last times you’ll hear me coming out of your radio box.”
The 55-year-old also thanked listeners for everything.
Andy has been on afternoons since 2010, having first joined the station in 1999. His colleague Colin Bloomfield from skin cancer less than two years ago.
