BBC says sorry for Ian Brady radio competition

The BBC has apologised after an “unacceptable” feature on BBC Radio Leeds about Ian Brady during Sunday Breakfast.

Presenter Nathan Turvey, who was sitting in for Johnny I’Anson, ran a ‘guess the headline’ competition by playing songs to identify the moors murderer. But reaction on Twitter, once the clip had been uploaded to the Radiofail website, was that of disbelief.

The songs were Mott the Hoople – All The Young Dudes, The Brady Bunch Theme Song, The Smiths – Suffer Little Children and Talking Heads – Psycho Killer.

Nathan calmly introduced the montage of songs and asked for listeners to call, text or tweet the right answer. Later in the programme he gave out the answer, saying congratulations to Barney in Haworth for getting through first.

The BBC told RadioToday: “This was clearly unacceptable and we apologise.”

A clip of the recording was passed around the radio industry on Sunday afternoon and it appeared on the Radiofail website on Sunday evening. It didn’t take long for newspapers to start writing about it.

Here’s the clip in question:
