The 25th anniversary of Alan Partridge’s BBC Radio debut will be marked with a special hour-long show on BBC Two later this year.

There’s more good news for Partridge fans too as the BBC finally confirms after all the speculation that there will be a new TV series – on BBC One – in 2018.

Both the one-off and the series will be made by Steve Coogan’s Baby Cow Productions.

Shane Allen, Controller of BBC Comedy, said: “Alan Partridge is in the top tier of comedy characters of all time, it fills my comedy heart with joy to welcome him back to BBC One and BBC Two.”

The Alan Partridge character was created by Steve Coogan and Armando Iannucci and he debuted as the sports presenter on Radio 4 spoof news programme On The Hour alongside Chris Morris. He then hosted six episodes of a Radio 4 spoof chat show, Knowing Me, Knowing You with Alan Partridge – first broadcast on 1 December 1992. Both shows transferred to TV in the early 90s, with On The Hour becoming The Day Today. Two series of I’m Alan Partridge aired on the BBC in 1997 and 2002, depicting Alan’s work at fictional station Radio Norwich and his quest for another series of Knowing Me, Knowing You.

In the last 15 years, Partridge has appeared in several TV specials, two series of Mid Morning Matters online and on Sky TV, and in the film Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa.
