Community radio applicant YO1 Radio has started an online stream ahead of a decision being made by Ofcom about its proposals to broadcast on FM.

YO1 Radio started at 7am on Tuesday 12th September, aimed at people in York and the North Yorkshire area.

“YO1 Radio will bring broadcasting across North Yorkshire into 21st Century,” explains co-founder and presenter Chris Marsden.

“Our research has shown that listening habits have changed radically in the last five years. People are consuming radio very differently through smart phones, tablets, computers and even Smart TVs – but it’s also clear they still want content that’s both entertaining and relevant to them.

“We’ve created YO1 to bridge the gap between local radio and the new ways that technology allows us to listen to it. As well as live shows we’ll be providing podcasts and specialist programmes covering a wide variety of musical tastes.”

Carla Ballantine, entrepreneur and breakfast presenter adds: “With so much new music around something I love to discover – and so many different ways to listen, each and every presenter here can really bring a new feel to the station. We’re a creative bunch and being an independent station gives us much more freedom over commercial stations.”

YO1 Directors Dougie Weake and Chris Marsden previously set up Vale Radio before transferring ownership to Star Radio North East.
